Privacy Policy

Spire (“we”, “us”) helps you care for your plants, with the AI gardener Gro as your personal assistant. We care about your privacy and only collect what we need to give you a good experience. This policy explains what data we process, why, and what rights you have. Spireapp AS (org. no. 937 657 730) is the data controller, and you can reach us at post@spireapp.ai.

What we collect

Account and profile

• Email address and name (from Apple, Google, or email sign-in).
• Profile information you provide: location (approximate coordinates), country, hardiness zone, experience level, interests, goals, garden type, a short bio, and a profile photo.

Content you create

• The plants in your garden, plant photos, and care logs.
• Conversations with the AI gardener Gro, including images you send in chat.
• Content you share with your neighborhood: listings, events, direct messages, and your profile.

Usage and device

• A push token so we can send notifications you have enabled.
• Anonymized usage and error analytics to improve the app and fix bugs. We never link your email or name to this data.
• Language preference.

Subscription

• Purchase and subscription status (whether you have Spire Premium, whether you are in a trial period, and when the subscription renews or expires). We never see your card or payment details.

Why we process your data

• To provide the service: account, garden, plant identification, and Gro chat.
• To give location-aware advice, weather, and seasonal tips.
• To let you share and swap plants with neighbors.
• To send notifications you have requested.
• To improve, secure, and debug the app.

The legal basis is performance of our contract with you (delivering the service) and your consent where required (for example notifications and location). You can withdraw consent at any time.

Shared gardens

A garden can be tended by more than one person. If you invite someone in, or join someone else’s garden, the two of you share everything in that garden. It is a bigger kind of sharing than what happens in the neighbourhood, and you should know exactly what it covers.

• What the people you share with can see: every plant in the garden with the notes written on them, the photos, the whole care log and garden log however far back it goes, the areas and tasks, and exactly where the garden is. Out in the neighbourhood we only ever show a rounded point; inside a shared garden we do not, because you are tending the same garden.
• What they cannot see: your conversations with Gro. Those stay yours alone, including in a shared garden, and they stay that way however long you share. You share the garden, not the diary. They also cannot see your email address, your subscription or your messages with other people.
• The garden profile shapes the advice for both of you. Gro remembers things about the garden, including what kind of garden it is and who uses it, and uses that to give advice. That memory belongs to the garden, not to you, so it applies to everyone who tends it.
• Everyone in the garden can change and delete. Whoever tends the garden with you can add plants, tick off tasks, upload and delete photos, and remove content you added yourself. We do not separate who owned what inside a garden, because that is the whole point of tending it together.
• Whoever created the garden decides who is in it. Only they can invite and remove. If you are removed you lose access immediately, and the content you added stays in the garden. You can leave a garden you were invited into whenever you like, with the same result.
• The invitation is a code. It lasts seven days, works once, and can be withdrawn before it is used. We always show you what the invited person will see before you send it.
• Premium runs both ways. If someone in the garden has a subscription, everyone in the garden gets Gro and the other AI features. If that person cancels, or leaves the garden, the access disappears for the others without them having done anything.

The legal basis is your consent. You give it by sending an invitation or redeeming a code, and you withdraw it by removing the person or leaving the garden. Content already shared stays, in the same way a message you have sent to someone else does.

Third parties we share with

We never sell your data. To run the service we use a few trusted providers (“data processors”). Here is who they are and what they do:

• Gro, the AI gardener: powered by Anthropic (Claude). Text and images you send in chat, including diagnosis, are processed to generate replies, and are not used to train models.
• Garden design:the photo you upload to see your garden reimagined is processed by Replicate (using Google’s image model) to create the suggestion.
• Plant identification: photos you take to recognize plants are sent to a specialized identification service.
• Database, authentication, and image storage: Supabase (EU-hosted) stores your account and content.
• Analytics and error reporting: PostHog (product analytics) and Sentry (error and crash reporting), both EU-hosted. We never attach your email or name to these statistics.
• Push notifications: Expo delivers the notifications you have enabled.
• Payments and subscriptions: purchases are handled by Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play). To validate purchases and keep track of your subscription status, we use RevenueCat. These receive purchase information and a user ID, but never your card details.
• Sign-in via Apple and Google: if you choose it.

The spireapp.ai website

The website is not the app, and collects far less. We count page views and clicks on the download buttons in PostHog, without cookies and without building a profile of you. Those statistics are anonymous, and cannot be traced back to a person.

If you accept marketing tracking in the banner at the bottom of the page, we also load the Meta Pixel, and send the same events from our server to Meta’s Conversions API. That means sharing your IP address, your browser, and Meta’s own advertising identifiers (the _fbp and _fbc cookies) with Meta Platforms Ireland. The purpose is to see whether our ads work. We never send your email, name, or phone number to Meta.

If you decline, Meta is not loaded at all, and nothing is sent there. You can change your mind by clearing the cookies for spireapp.ai in your browser. We will ask again next time you visit.

Transfers outside the EEA

Some of our providers are located in the USA: Anthropic, Replicate, RevenueCat, and Expo. When data is transferred there, it is done under the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs), as required by data protection law. Database, storage, analytics, and error reporting are EU-hosted (Supabase, PostHog, and Sentry). Ad measurement on the website goes to Meta Platforms Ireland, which transfers to the USA under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Storage and deletion

We keep your data for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account at any time inside the app, under Settings → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, your conversations with Gro, your photos and all other content. Deletion cannot be undone.

If you tend a garden together with other people, the content you added to that garden stays with them: the plants, the photos and the log entries. It is no longer linked to you or to your name, and the garden carries on without you. If you want it gone first, you can delete it in the app or leave the garden before deleting your account. Gardens where you are the only member are deleted in full, with all their content.

Your rights

Under privacy law (GDPR) you have the right to access, correct, and delete your data, as well as data portability and to object to certain processing. You can do much of this directly in the app. If you need help, contact us at the email below. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (in Norway, Datatilsynet).

Security

We use reputable providers and industry-standard safeguards to protect your data. No service is 100% secure, but we work continuously to keep your data safe.

Children

Spire is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under that age.

Changes

We may update this policy. For significant changes we will notify you in the app or by email. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
